1. Preparing for Drama
Step 1: Read the drama thoroughly at least one time.
Step 2: Understand the nature of every character.
Step 3: Understand basic concepts like soliloquies, rhetoric and symbolism, and study them with reference to the drama.
2. Preparing for Poetry
Step 1: Read the poem and underline difficult words, and complete the first reading without searching for their meanings.
Step 2: Search for the meanings of difficult words and write their meanings in pencil near the stanzas.
Step 3: Understand the three most important things: 1. setting 2. theme 3. symbolism and images in the poem.
3. Preparing for Short Stories
Step 1: Read the story, mark the new words and understand their meanings.
Step 2: Understand the theme, plots and setting of the story.
Step 3: Understand the characters and their nature.
4. Preparing for Novel Reading
Step 1: Read the novel for enjoyment. Never think that you are reading it for the purposes of an exam. Understand new words with the help of available resources (may be internet resources or a dictionary, online or in book form).
Step 2: Understand the setting and characters of the novel.
Step 3: Try to co-relate the script of the novel with your own daily life.
Step 4: If possible, search YouTube. You may find a movie for a particular novel.
Step 5: Read the novel in parts. Don’t read the complete novel in one sitting.
Step 6: See previous years’ question papers and try to solve them.
5. Preparing for Prose
Step 1: First understand the difference between verse and prose.
Step 2: Understand what the different types of prose are and their nature.
Step 3: Read different samples of prose such as diary writing, autobiography or biography, essays and narrative and descriptive prose. Try to understand their nature and the concepts behind them.
6. Preparing for Grammar
First understand the course syllabus.
Read the books provided by the university instead of wandering here and there. You can use the internet, but don’t spend time collecting materials.
Recall your childhood. How did you learn grammar during your school days?
Understand the concepts of descriptive and prescriptive grammar.
Use the rules of grammar in daily life.
Literature is a very interesting subject and a living subject. You should enjoy it.
